On Saturday, April 20th 2013, “The Diplomat” will have its worldwide premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival.
At the height of the Cold War, Katarina Witt became one of East Germany’s most famous athletes, winning six European titles, four world championships and back-to-back Olympic gold medals. Known as “the most beautiful face of socialism,” she earned unique benefits in East Germany but also constant surveillance from the Stasi, the notorious secret police force. The Diplomat chronicles Witt’s courageous fight for her future at home before and after the fall of the Berlin Wall.

Joel Serves as Composer Mentor for LA Film Fest

Project Involve is the LA Film Fest’s signature diversity program dedicated to cultivating the careers of filmmakers from communities traditionally underrepresented in the industry. In partnership with ASCAP, I am currently serving as a mentor to several up-and-coming filmmakers and composers, guiding them through through the film scoring process and helping them learn to collaborate most effectively. The program concludes in June when their short films premiere at the Los Angeles Film Festival. I will also be moderating a panel discussion with several of the program participants.

“American Winter” Premieres on HBO

“American Winter” Premieres on HBO

On Monday, March 18th, “American Winter” made its broadcast premiere on HBO. Filmed over the course of one winter in Portland, Oregon, “American Winter” presents an intimate and emotionally evocative snapshot of the state of our economy as it is playing out in many American families. It was a wonderful challenge to score this picture, balancing the sincerity of these families’ stories with the unfortunate circumstances they face. I hope you all have a chance to see this timely film.
